Now take a look at shape B in Figure 11.11. The top length of the quadrilateral is 5 units, the bottom length is 7 units, and the height is 3 units. The length of the slanted side is determined using the Pythagorean Theorem (see Chapter 9):

a2 + b2 = c2

32 + 22 = c2

9 + 4 = c2

13 = c2

= c

Therefore, the perimeter of the quadrilateral is as follows:

5 + 7 + 3 + = 15 + units

IT DOESN’T ADD UP

A common error is to include the lengths of line segments inside the two-dimensional figure. The perimeter is sum of the measures of the line segments on the outside only.
